The Southern Death Cult

 

En 1981, el vocalista Ian Astbury se unió a una banda local como la voz principal y la renombró a «Southern Death Cult», en honor a una tribu norteamericana del delta del Mississippi de los siglos XIV y XV. La primera actuación de la banda fue en Queen’s Hall en Bradford, Inglaterra el 29 de octubre de 1981. La banda estuvo junta por aproximadamente 16 meses, lanzando un sencillo, «Moya», y tocando con las bandas Bauhaus y Theatre of Hate antes de separarse después de un concierto en Manchester en febrero de 1983. El álbum SDC fue lanzado por Beggars Banquet pero era en esencia trabajo hecho sobre el sencillo, sesiones de radio y actuaciones en vivo. En el 2006 Ian Astbury dijo que le encantaría grabar el álbum que «Southern Death Cult» nunca hizo.

The MIssion UK - Masque

 

En 1985, Wayne Hussey (Guitarra) y Craig Adams (Bajo) abandonaron The Sisters Of Mercy por diferencias con el cantante Andrew Eldritch. Formaron una nueva banda con Simon Hinkler (Guitarra) y Mick Brown (Batería). Hussey y Adams llamaron al nuevo grupo The Sisterhood y tocaron por primera vez en el club Alice In Wonderland de Londres. Debutaron con canciones como «Wasteland», «Serpent’s Kiss» y «Severina».
Originalmente pretendían usar el nombre The Sisterhood, pero esta idea fue desechada tras desentendimientos con el líder de The Sisters of Mercy, Andrew Eldritch. The Sisterhood era el nombre del club de fans de The Sisters Of Mercy. The Sisterhood reveló su nuevo nombre en el Electric Ballroom de Londres - The Mission. Ian Astbury y Billy Duffy de The Cult se unieron a la banda para hacer coros y se rumorea que Andrew Eldritch estuvo entre la audiencia!
En julio, The Mission firmó por Phonogram Records. Su album de debut «God’s Own Medicine» fue publicado. The Mission consiguieron su primer hit en el UK Top 40 cuando el primer single del album, «Stay With Me» alcanzó el número 30 de la lista. La cantante de All About Eve, Julianne Regan colaboró con los coros de fondo de algunas canciones del disco, y la banda le devolvió el favor cuando Wayne produjo el single de All About Eve «Our Summer» en el que Mick tocaba la batería.
